Team Builds 'Bridges' Through Language Immersion

Nov 2003 - The ECU Magazine "Peices of Eight" this month has an article singing the praises of the Snow Hill Primary School's Los Puentes program.
Of this program, the first of its kind in rural USA, the artical says, "Three months into Los Puentes and already the children in Maria Elena Castaño's kindergarten class at Snow Hill Primary are speaking and learning in Spanish. For some of them, it's the language they know best. For others, Spanish is a whole new language. Castaño, who taught primary school in her native Colombia for more than a decade, said she is excited to be a part of such an innovative program." -- (for the full story and pictures click here)

Learning from Amistad ("Friendship") School in New York City
Los Puentes has the advantage of learning from the experience of other successful dual immersion language school models. With the collaboration of other dual immersion schools we can focus on effectively implementing our program without having to "reinvent the wheel." One such model school is the Amistad ("friendship" in Spanish") School in New York City

maintain a balance with respect to gender and language dominance. Children who did not gain entry into the program have been placed on a waiting list and will be contacted in order of application should places in the program open. Based on the experience of other dual language immersion programs, should places open up we will accept new children into the program through the first grade. After that point, only children who can demonstrate adequate fluency and literacy in both Spanish and English will be accepted (2nd grade and thereafter). If you have not applied for Los Puentes but are interested in placing your child on the waiting list, you may pick up an application at the Snow Hill Primary School Main Office.

In the Class Room

"IT'S A SMALL WORLD"

Children and teachers at Snow Hill Primary School celebrated global geographic and cultural diversity through a week long school-wide social studies event -- "It's a Small World." The halls of Snow Hill Primary were converted into continents burgeoning with colorful displays presenting geographic and cultural information on different nations across the globe. Children were treated to a variety of ethnic dishes throughout the week as well Mexican and Polynesian dance performances. The Los Puentes Spanish World teacher Maria Elena Castano and her students focused on learning about Mexico throughout the week. Congratulations to the teachers and children for this magnificent celebration of global diversity that brought the world to Snow Hill Primary.
